Ranveer Opts for Corporate Studio Backing
The actor’s growing association with powerful business houses could reshape his equation with traditional Bollywood studios
The high-stakes fallout surrounding Don 3 may have opened a new chapter in Ranveer Singh’s career — one where powerful corporate backing could give the star greater muscle against traditional Bollywood studio pressure.
With Pralay now underway, Ranveer is firmly positioned within a corporate-backed ecosystem. The post-apocalyptic thriller, which began filming on August 16, is backed by Ananya Birla’s Birla Studios, Hansal Mehta’s True Story Films and Ranveer’s own Maa Kasam Films.
The blockbuster Dhurandhar franchise has further strengthened Ranveer’s commercial clout while deepening his professional equation with Jio Studios and the Ambani family.
With backing from heavyweight business houses such as Birla and Ambani, Ranveer arguably has more leverage than a star dependent solely on traditional studios. Such backing could insulate the actor from traditional studio pressure tactics or what some perceive as “boycotts” engineered by older industry circles. After Ranveer exited Don 3 following delays in the script and creative disagreements, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) issued a non-cooperation directive against him. Excel Entertainment claimed it had suffered losses of `40–45 crore in pre-production costs. Industry experts believe that if a script is repeatedly delayed, altered or fails to meet the expectations of a major franchise, walking away can be justified. Studios, meanwhile, are left carrying the burden of sunk costs — from elaborate sets to international locations.
Producer Suneel Darshan says, “Studios should not use outside pressure tactics to force a settlement. Legal or industrial intervention is the only leverage a studio has to recoup losses when no film is delivered.
