‘Push Through Periods?’ Sreeleela Faces Backlash
The actor’s remarks have triggered debate, with many arguing that lived experiences vary and generalisations can be damaging

Actor Sreeleela, who is also a doctor by training, recently spoke candidly about dealing with the challenges of being a woman in the film industry, stressing that menstrual periods in particular should not be seen as limiting. Several women have taken exception to her remarks.
“Periods should not be a problem for us. I have shot many hit songs while I was menstruating, and those songs got a lot of praise. When we ask for equal opportunities and rights as men, is it right to stay back citing period problems?... We have to push ourselves,” Sreeleela said. She was speaking at the success party for Ustaad Bhagat Singh, of which she is the leading lady.
The actor’s remarks have not gone down well, particularly with women who go through painful periods.
Several women have reacted sharply on social media, pointing out that the experience is different for different people, and that it’s wrong to generalise. They have quoted examples of women who sometimes find it difficult to even get off their bed because of the pain, yet have to continue with their responsibilities in their homes and at their workplaces.
