Priyanka To Play Indian Cinema’s First ‘Item Girl’
She will portray dancer Azurie in the biopic ‘Amri’
Amri, Mira Nair’s celluloid portrait of Indian-Hungarian painter Amrita Sher-Gill, will see Priyanka Chopra Jonas in an important cameo – she plays the first ‘item girl’ of Indian cinema, Madame Azurie. Known as the ‘lightning-footed dancer,’ Azurie, a trained danseuse, rapidly became a craze among audiences, who it is said, would go repeatedly to the theatre just to watch her perform.
Azurie starred in over 700 movies and has also performed at Buckingham Palace by invitation. To play this fascinating dancer in Amri, Priyanka Chopra has been watching the early Indian movies. This is not the first time Priyanka is doing an item song. In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela, her dance number Raam chahe Leela chahe was a smash hit. Interestingly, Priyanka Chopra is also the Executive Producer of Amri.
