Osmania General Hospital Performs Gender-Affirming Surgeries Under Service Launched Nine Months Ago
Prof. Lakshmi said the initiative aimed to make gender-affirming procedures safer and more accessible to people who might otherwise face financial and logistical barriers to specialised care.

Hyderabad: Osmania General Hospital (OGH) said it had performed gender-affirming surgeries for transgender persons over nine months under a dedicated service established by its department of plastic and reconstructive Surgery, making specialised surgical care available through the government healthcare system.
Prof P. Lakshmi, department head, said a multidisciplinary team had been providing surgical care to transgender persons, with support from departments including anaesthesiology, endocrinology, urology, gynaecology and psychiatry.
The procedures performed included frontal bossing reduction, autologous fat grafting for breast enhancement, breast augmentation with implants, penile inversion vaginoplasty and bilateral nipple-areola complex-sparing mastectomy. The team said it followed an approach involving patient evaluation, individualised surgical planning, perioperative care and post-operative follow-up.
Prof. Lakshmi said the initiative aimed to make gender-affirming procedures safer and more accessible to people who might otherwise face financial and logistical barriers to specialised care.
The hospital has also received support through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) and Aarogyasri to arrange essential hormones, implants and equipment required for procedures. A three-bed ward has been renovated to provide post-operative care for transgender patients, with support from the Queer Badhu Parents Association, whose president is Mukunda Mala.
The programme was intended to provide comprehensive care within the public health system, from patient assessment and surgical treatment to recovery and follow-up. The department plans to expand the range of gender-affirming procedures offered at the hospital.
