Monsoon & Hepatitis: Why Awareness Is Crucial Now
The liver quietly keeps the body running with over 500 vital functions — until hepatitis strikes. Often symptomless for years, this “silent disease” can lead to life-threatening complications if ignored, says expert
Weighing about 2% of an adult’s body weight, the liver is vital for over 500 essential functions — from metabolism and digestion to detoxification and vitamin storage. “It is the body’s largest gland, producing bile, processing nutrients, regulating blood volume, synthesizing clotting factors, and filtering toxins,” says Dr Tom Cherian, founder & MD, South Asian Liver Institute.
The Silent Threat
Inflammation of the liver, often caused by viruses, toxins, or autoimmunity. “Can progress from acute (short-term) to chronic inflammation, leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer,” the senior liver transplant surgeon.
Types & Transmission
Hepatitis A, E, F: Spread via contaminated food or water (fecal–oral route).
Hepatitis B, C, D, G: Spread via blood, body fluids, or sexual contact.
Non-viral causes: Alcohol, drugs, toxins, or autoimmune attacks on liver tissue.
Common Symptoms
Many remain asymptomatic for years. When present, symptoms may include:
· Fever,
· Fatigue
· Nausea
· Vomiting
· Loss of appetite,
· Abdominal pain
· Dark urine
· Pale stools
· Jaundice
· Joint pain
Diagnosis
1. Blood Tests: Liver function test, clotting profile.
2. Imaging: Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, Fibroscan.
3. Biopsy: Determines inflammation or scarring severity.
4. Advanced Biopsy: Trans-jugular route for patients with bleeding risk.
PREVENTION
· During the monsoon, opt for boiled or RO-purified water
· Steer clear of raw fruits, uncooked salads, and street food.
· Always wash hands thoroughly with soap before eating, and store meals in clean, covered containers.
· For added protection, especially for those at higher risk, vaccination against Hepatitis A and B is strongly recommended.
