Kishore Kumar’s Song Becomes Gen Z’s Anthem of Protest

Kishore Kumar’s melody from the sixties – Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi – has struck an unlikely chord in the modern, digital era. The track has transcended its tragic romantic roots to morph into a high-energy anthem which captured the prevailing angst at the recent student-led mass demonstrations at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The song from the 1964 film Mr. X in Bombay, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, was blasted at the venue of the protest against the NEET exam paper leaks. Specifically, the segment Aaj Rusva Teri Galiyon Mein Mohabbat Hogi gave apt voice to Gen Z’s dissent.
Long before the recent protests, the line was kept alive on short-video algorithms by creators like Faisal Shaikh and Hasnain Khan, setting up its cross-generational familiarity.
The protestors at Jantar Mantar mixed serious advocacy with pop culture, cosplaying Spider-Man, Batman and the Hulk and Kishore Kumar’s ballad added another layer of youthful energy and dissension to the ambience.
