Is Tamannaah in Danger of Objectification?

Her acting prowess is being overshadowed by the ‘item numbers’ she’s been picking up

Why is an actress as talented as Tamannaah Bhatia having to sizzle to survive in the rat race? In recent years, Tamannaah has performed special song-and-dance numbers in Telugu films like Alludu Seenu, Speedunnodu, Jaguar, Jai Lava Kusa, Sarileru Neekevvaru and Ghani, apart from ‘special songs’ or ‘item numbers,’ in KGF 1 (Kannada) and Raid 2 (Hindi), each more provocative than the other.

Over the years, her impeccable credentials as an actress have been proven time after time. The performance that most recently won her positive reviews was in the series Do You Wanna Partner on Amazon.

Yet, her special song-and-dance ‘Ghafoor’ in the recent controversial series Bads Of Bombay (brazenly announced as an ‘item song’ by the trio of villains Gulshan Grover, Ranjeet and Shakti Kapoor on screen) pulls out all stops in objectifying her.

Defending these special song-and-dance appearances, a fellow actress says, “Most of these special songs were done as a favour to friends, producers or co-stars with the tacit promise of a full-fledged leading role in their subsequent films. Heroines often fall into such traps. Raj Kumar Santoshi got Urmila Matondkar to do a special song and dance in two of his films — China Gate and Lajja — promising to make her the leading lady in his next, but that was a promise he never kept.”
