‘I’m Always Looking Ahead; My Hands Are Full With a Lot of Things’

Dimple Kapadia on life at 69

On June 8, Dimple Kapadia turned 69. Her approach to life is not something one comes across often in the world of glamour. The legendary actress, who held sway in the Bollywood of the 1970s, shares how she looks at her heyday and also the road ahead.

Dimple, no less than a cult figure was surprisingly reluctant to agree to an interview. “Why do you want to interview me? There are so many far more relevant and good-looking actors. I’m a has-been,” she told with a chuckle.

When reminded that this “has-been” had been part of such memorable films like Rudaali, Lekin, Kaash, Drishi and Zakhmee Aurat, she shot back, “Does anyone remember these films except you?”

“Yeah, of course I’ve very fond memories of these. But I don’t care to live in the past. Jo ho gaya so ho gaya. I’m always looking ahead, trying to keep myself interested in life.”

Pushing 70, Dimple said she doesn’t feel the burden of age. “Nor do I miss doing movies,” she stressed. “The occasional one which comes my way is enough.”

“I was a first-generation actor in my family,” she reminisced. “I was only 15 when I was offered Bobby by Raj Kapoor Saab. I had no idea what I was doing. I blindly followed the director.”

But now, the third generation of the Kapadia/Khanna family is ready to step into filmdom!

Any unfulfilled wishes? “None! None at all. I’ve the most beautiful family, of which I am more proud than my career as an actor,” the evergreen ‘Bobby’ signed off.
