‘I Consider Myself Lucky for Attracting These Kinds of Roles’

Jyotika on playing a courtroom stenographer in System

In Prime Video’s upcoming film System, Jyotika delivers a powerful performance as Sarika Rawat, a low-income courtroom stenographer navigating emotional and personal turmoil.

Reflecting on portraying emotion through restraint and silence, Jyotika says, “I think there’s a power in silence and composure. There’s an inner depth to it, and I consider myself very lucky that I’m attracting these kinds of roles because, even as an actor, it’s a very complex emotion and at the same time very difficult to perform.”

The actor says she particularly enjoyed expressing her character’s inner conflicts without relying heavily on dialogue. “It’s always easier to perform when you have dialogues and words, but silence speaks through the eyes. I feel it’s the highest form of art for an actor to emote through silence. I’m extremely happy because I think it also forms the backbone of womanhood, and that translates into my character in System.”

Sharing further insight into Sarika Rawat, Jyotika explains that the character carries emotional layers that slowly unfold through the course of the film. “When you watch the film, you realise I’m portraying a person you cannot fully penetrate at a superficial level. If, over the two hours of the film, I’m able to convince audiences that there is some turmoil within her without expressing it through words, then I feel the performance has achieved its purpose,” she says.
