‘Even More Heartbreaking Than My Own’

Two years after her own battle, Munn opens up about caring for her mother through chemo — and the test that saved both their lives

Olivia Munn is sharing another deeply personal chapter in her cancer journey — this time, about her mother.

In an emotional Instagram post on July 9, the actress revealed that her mother has been diagnosed with stage 1 Her2 breast cancer, two years after Munn’s own diagnosis in 2023. “It’s really hard going through cancer,” she wrote. “But there’s something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking.”

Munn, 45, credited the Tyrer-Cuzick breast cancer risk assessment test — the same one that helped detect her own cancer early — for saving her mom’s life. Despite a clear mammogram, her mom’s lifetime risk score was 26.2%, prompting Munn to push for an MRI. The diagnosis followed shortly after.

Since then, her mother has completed 12 rounds of chemotherapy and continues monthly Herceptin treatments. Munn shared poignant photos and videos from her mom’s journey, including a bell-ringing moment after finishing chemo.

From finding a shared oncologist to late nights managing symptoms, Munn wrote, “I spent many nights taking care of my mom when the chemo became too much, wishing I could fight the fight for her.” She also thanked healthcare workers and caregivers, calling them essential in these moments.

Munn urged every gynecologist to incorporate lifetime risk tests into regular care plans, saying, “It saved my life. And now my mom’s.”

Her mother’s message said, “I hope by sharing my story, it helps save someone else’s life.”
