Diljit Dosanjh Steps Back From Promoting New Film

The Main Vaapas Aaunga star says he’s fed up of controversies

Controversies and Diljit Dosanjh seem to go hand-in-hand. So much so that Diljit has decided to stay away from the marketing and promotion of his new film Main Vaapas Aaunga, which opens next month.

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film, spanning generations, is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and stars Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah besides Diljit, and has music by A.R. Rahman.

Diljit recently sparked a ‘Punjab vs Panjab’ debate. In a recent post on X, the singer shared a video of him arriving at Chandigarh airport accompanied by the word ‘Panjab.’ Social media users alleged that he deliberately omitted the Indian flag emoji in his post. Then, at a recent concert in Canada, some members of the audience raised pro-Khalistan slogans. The latest controversy is about Diljit allegedly being a US citizen.

“Bahot ho gaya. Diljit is fed up of the controversies. Although he is very close to Imtiaz Ali, and he has actively promoted his earlier film Chamkila, Diljit this time has no choice but to lie low,” a friend of the musician-actor told.

Imtiaz’s Chamkila fetched Diljit the most praise as an actor. In fact, he came on board for the film primarily to work with the filmmaker.

The makers are left to grapple with a situation in which the star distances himself from the promotions.
