Dia Mirza’s Anti-Cracker Video Taken Down

BMC bows to pressure after Mumbai BJP chief says “We don’t need lessons on how to celebrate Diwali from her”

The BMC has quietly pulled down its anti-cracker awareness video featuring actor-environmentalist Dia Mirza after facing heat from BJP and Shiv Sena leaders.

What was the campaign?

The video was part of a larger BMC drive, initiated after a Bombay HC order on Mumbai’s rising pollution. The civic body had roped in several celebs for free public service messages — including Dia Mirza, Madhuri Dixit, Marathi star Nishigandha Wad and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane urging citizens to avoid bursting firecrackers.

Why was Dia singled out?

Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam publicly called out Dia’s inclusion. Taking to X, he wrote, “We don’t need lessons on how to celebrate Diwali from Dia Mirza. Our traditions are deeply rooted in our culture.”

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit joined the chorus, questioning why civic bodies only target Hindu festivals to preach environmental awareness. Within hours of the backlash, the BMC deleted Dia’s video from all its official social handles without any official statement. Interestingly, videos featuring Madhuri Dixit and Ajinkya Rahane are still up!

Dia breaks silence

Reacting to the removal and trolling, Dia said, “Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. The video was recorded in the interest of public awareness, with the intention of encouraging a healthier celebration. Air pollution is a matter of public health, and every effort towards reducing it is a step towards a better environment for all. Why would anyone be critical of a video the Honourable Bombay High Court and BMC have made me record in public interest? Air Pollution is an area of concern and all efforts to reduce pollution should be welcomed because it’s a matter of public health.”
