Cibi Chakravarthi to helm Rajini-Kamal project
Indications are that the much-anticipated film will be a mix of family drama and action

It’s now official that Cibi Chakravarthi has been brought on board to direct the much-awaited Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan collaboration, following the exit of Sundar C from the project. This marks a significant milestone for Cibi, who has so far directed only Sivakarthikeyan’s Don.
Sharing his excitement, Cibi wrote, “Once, a small-town boy’s big dream was to meet his favourite star, ‘SUPER STAR,’ and take a picture with him — which drove his passion for cinema. Then came the bigger dream of directing him. I came close but missed it. I continued to believe it would happen one day — and today is that day. #Thalaivar173 Day.”
He added, “I remember Thalaivar saying, ‘Dreams do come true. Miracles do happen.’ Life sometimes goes beyond dreams, and today, with legendary Ulaganayakan, Padma Shri @ikamalhaasan sir, and #Mahendran sir as our producer, I promise to put my heart and soul into this project.”
The makers also unveiled a poster with the line ‘Celebrations Begin’, featuring needles, a gun, and scissors on a black background, alongside the tagline: ‘Every hero has a family. Every family has a hero.’
Anirudh Ravichander will reunite with Rajinikanth to compose the music. Produced by Kamal Haasan under Raaj Kamal Films International, the film is scheduled for a Pongal 2027 release. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have shared screen space in over 20 films, including Apoorva Raagangal, Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, and Ninaithale Inikkum. They later chose to stop acting together due to career and business considerations. After 46 years, the legendary actors are now collaborating again for Thalaivar 173, though it remains unclear if Kamal Haasan will appear in a cameo.
