Mattel pays emotional tribute to Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi: ‘Barbie is better because they loved the brand’

Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, celebrated Barbie designers and founders of the renowned doll atelier Magia2000, were killed in a head-on collision on Italy’s A4 Turin-Milan highway on Sunday, July 28. The accident also claimed the lives of two others, including a local banker and the elderly driver responsible for the crash.

In a public tribute posted on July 28, Mattel said: “The Barbie team is heartbroken by the loss of Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, two treasured creators and Mattel collaborators who brought joy and artistry to the world of Barbie as Magia2000.”
Tributes from fans, collectors, and friends have poured in on social media.
Signature designs
Paglino and Grossi’s signature designs—lavish, detailed, and often inspired by icons like Madonna, Cher, Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga, and Sarah Jessica Parker—gained international acclaim among collectors and fans. They also produced a number of one-off dolls inspired by famous paintings, including works by Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Piet Mondrian.
