Baby's Day Out To Spa-rkle And Shine
India is witnessing a baby spa boom, parents are pampering their tiny tots with oil massages, bubble baths and hydrotherapy sessions, experts point out benefits and caution of overindulgence

In a land where Ayurveda and holistic living are deeply rooted, a new wellness trend is making gentle ripples—baby spas. Once popular only among affluent families abroad, these mini-sized relaxation hubs have now found their way into the hearts (and routines) of Indian parents.
Baby spas serve as a blend of contemporary science meeting infants through floating hydrotherapy tactics to warm massages or cold-pressed oils. The sessions range between 20 minutes to 40 minutes and costs Rs 2,250 onwards. The baby spa services range from specially designed floatation devices for babies to swim-nappies, protective swimsuits, and nurturing therapies such as baby massages and hydrotherapy.
Baby Spas, What's that?
“Baby spas can be immensely beneficial if used appropriately and mindfully.” says Riddhi Doshi Patel, a Child Psychologist & Parenting Counsellor. She explains that at the root of baby spas lies tactics of Hydrotherapy. Something that isn’t just beneficial for babies but has a storehouse of benefits for adults across the age spectrum.
When it comes to babies, it specifically enhances those little muscles, improves digestion and much more. “There have been instances where babies also have an improved sleep pattern with these spas,” adds Riddhi.
Water Babies
At first glance, the idea of a baby hitting the spa seems unnecessary. However, a dive deeper sheds light on certain facets of developmental science. At the heart of these baby spas are water-based therapy aka Hydrotherapy sessions. These could range from flotation using neck rings, to nice oiled massages designed to aid motor skills.
Swati shares how the central component of these spas is all about Hydrotherapy. She says, “Infant floating or swimming with those tiny neck rings is the primary service in almost all baby spas.” This is usually supported by warm water that allows a baby to relax well. Flotation devices and jets are then latched onto for a brief period of 10-30 mins long. Post these floating sessions what follows is the typical massage period. Swati says, “Baby spas are typically paired with floating sessions under expert-guides.”
Baby’s Day Out
Many feel baby spas are a fad and not a compulsion. India has been home to ancient practices and tactics. Many of which have ayurveda integrated in terms of the oils and massage techniques used and handed down through generations.
Riddhi says, “These baby spas could be opted for, however the same can be done at home.”
Riddhi opines that these spas can be easily administered by newbie moms that helps deepen the bond they develop with their little ones over time. Emphasizing that all babies needn’t be taken to baby spas. Parents who find it difficult to have massages and spa-like environments at home could opt for these. Additionally, those having premature babies too, post the advice of a medical health expert could consider these.
Dr. Samir Dalwai, a Developmental Paediatrician offers a cautious perspective on the growing trend of baby spas. He says, “Most of these baby spas could easily become flashy fads for those with the means to indulge.”
With a hint of scepticism, he adds, “Why would healthy, normal babies require therapy?”
He urges parents not to follow such trends blindly, especially when their infants don’t have any specific developmental needs. Dr. Samir emphasizes that the most vital emotional nourishment a baby receives during its early years comes from close family and community bonds—something that doesn’t require expensive setups. “Even in modest households, the affection and care provided to a child can offer deep feelings of safety and security,” he says. “There’s no particular benefit to replacing that with artificial experiences.”
Human Touch
All in all, it’s not about ruling out baby spas. These spas need to be incorporated only if required. Riddhi says, “Not all baby spas and therapies are able to understand the requirements of a baby.” Besides, such spas require expert guidance.
She advises parents to create such an experience at home. Perhaps, it’s all about being as involved in those formative years of one’s baby. While baby spas offer moments and waves of relaxation and possible benefits. It’s important that parent’s approach these only if need arises! Period.
