Anil to turn director with ‘Nayak’ sequel

Despite underperforming at the BO, the first film later gained cult status

Remember the much-discussed film Nayak (2001), in which Anil Kapoor played a journalist who assumes the role of chief minister of a corruption-ridden state for a single day?

Directed by acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Shankar, Nayak may have underperformed at the box office upon release, but it later went on to achieve significant retrospective success. Over the years, the film has earned recognition as one of the more impactful political dramas in Indian cinema.

Now, more than two decades later, Anil Kapoor is set to take the story forward — this time as a director. The actor has acquired the rights to Nayak and is preparing to take the sequel on floors, which he will also helm.

Speaking about the project, Kapoor says, “Nayak is a film that is very close to my heart. When it was released, it didn’t get the success it deserved. But later, it became a big hit. Today, everyone regards it as one of the best films I’ve done.”

The sequel marks Anil Kapoor’s directorial debut and promises to revisit a story that has grown more relevant with time.
