Aamir Salutes the Unsung Heroes

Sitaaron Ke Sitaare honours the courage and quiet strength of parents raising specially-abled children

Aamir Khan has been silently working on a documentary — and no ordinary one at that! The project tells the story of the parents of the specially-abled children who participated in his highly acclaimed film Sitaare Zameen Par.

Directed by Shaanib Bakshi, Sitaaron Ke Sitaare from the Aamir Khan Productions, it will be released on December 19.

For Aamir, the real heroes are the parents of the young actors. “Sure, these specially-abled youngsters face unimaginable struggles to live with dignity, all their lives. But have we thought about what their parents go through?” he asks. “I believe they’re even bigger heroes than the children. Their story had to be told.”

But will audiences come for such a film, especially with Dhurandhar dominating theatres? “If you want me to do something, just tell me it can’t be done,” Aamir laughs. “Every time I’ve tried something different, people around me have said ‘don’t do it’ — whether it was Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, or Taare Zameen Par. I’ve realized that when a story truly interests me, it gets into my bloodstream, and I can’t help but pursue it. That’s exactly what happened with this documentary. I felt the deep impact of these stories needed to be shared with the audience. It came from the heart — and that’s why I made it.”
