Aamir, Farhan To Share Screen In Cricket Film

‘Lalkaar’ is centred on the iconic Lala Amarnath

Aamir Khan plays the legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath in the upcoming period sports drama Lalkaar. The highly-anticipated project reunites the actor with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, marking exactly 25 years since their Oscar-nominated cricket epic Lagaan.

Rather than a straightforward biopic, Lalkaar is structured as a grand historical sports drama centred on cricket, friendship, rivalry, and national pride. The narrative explores the turbulent era of the Partition and culminates around the landmark 1952 India-Pakistan Test series under Lala Amarnath's captaincy—independent India's first Test victory against Pakistan.

Farhan Akhtar has joined the cast in a lead role alongside Aamir Khan, playing a close companion and fellow cricketer. Both Aamir and Farhan are expected to undergo rigorous training in cricket to prepare them to portray their characters authentically.

The screenplay is developed by writers Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh, with heavy creative inputs from the powerhouse duo Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, who co-wrote Munnabhai.

Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwani are also co-producing the movie under their banner. The film is expected to go on the floors in October. The makers are aiming for theatrical release in December 2027, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the historic 1952 Test series.

Regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Indian cricket, Lala Amarnath holds a permanent place in sports history. He scored India’s first-ever Test century in 1933 against England. He later became independent India's first cricket captain, leading the nation to its legendary inaugural series win over Pakistan.
