Tripping through life

Bobby Joshi's photographs of rural life and nature showcase some of the most scenic places in Asia and Europe.

Photographer Bobby Joshi has lost count of the number of places he has travelled to and captured on his camera. A consultant for a firm in Bengaluru, the 40-year-old has travelled all over the world for work, his photography equipment in tow, capturing the landscapes of some of the most beautiful places on Earth.

He’s one of the lucky ones, we tell him, and Bobby agrees — not many people have a day job that allows them to indulge in their passion. “I don’t make money from my photography, rather, I shoot whenever I travel,” he says, adding that he has, however, shot for a few commercial projects.

From China to Vietnam and almost every part of India, Bobby’s photographs, which can be seen on his website and social media pages, have garnered a lot of attention. The attraction is how he has portrayed the environment — landscapes of rural areas that show a peaceful co-existence between humans and nature. It’s easy to lose yourself in the images, hoping that you would also come across such places.

“My dad was in the Army and since my childhood, I have travelled extensively all over Asia. I have always liked nature and there was a natural gravitation towards that style of photography,” he recalls.

Quite a few of his journeys stand out for him because of the places and the people he met. “In 2014, I took a four-day trip to China and was helped by an English-speaking guide. I had a completely different impression about the people and culture there. All that was put to rest because the reality was complete opposite,” Bobby describes with a smile.

It’s not just the photographs that endear a place to him — every trip has a story. “Last year, I went on a road trip from Germany to Italy. On the way, everything in our car was stolen. I lost everything — my passport, visa, equipment, bags... These trips may look amazing but it’s not easy, and you take it with a pinch of salt.”

While he doesn’t have any plans for his photographs to be featured in galleries, he does want to share his knowledge with viewers. Through his blog and Facebook pages, he has shared tips and advice to beginners. Other than that, he is working to complete his bucket list, including a visit to the Hunan province in China.
