Telangana Open To Amending Bhu Bharathi Act: Ponguleti

Srinivas Reddy said all genuine applications received under the pilot phase of Bhu Bharathi in four mandals would be resolved by June 2.

Nalgonda: The state government is open to making minor changes to the modalities of the Bhu Bharathi Act, if required, based on public feedback, said revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Tuesday. Addressing an awareness programme on Bhu Bharathi Act at Alair in Yadadri-Bhongir district, he said the Act was prepared after detailed deliberations of a Cabinet Sub-committee and by adopting best practices from the land revenue laws of 28 states across the country. Constructive suggestions from opposition parties were also taken while formulating the Act. The Congress government’s sole aim was to bring in a land revenue law that benefits the people, he declared.

Srinivas Reddy said all genuine applications received under the pilot phase of Bhu Bharathi in four mandals would be resolved by June 2. The pilot rollout would extend to one mandal in each of 28 districts—excluding Hyderabad, Khammam, Mulugu, Vikarabad and Kamareddy—from May 1. Based on feedback collected from these 28 mandals, the government would consider small changes to the modalities, if required, he informed.

Criticising the Dharani portal introduced by the previous BRS government in 2020, the minister described it as a measure “drafted by four persons behind closed doors”. He said people suffered when land registrations were halted for 100 days, making it difficult to sell land even for urgent needs like education or medical expenses. He alleged that the BRS government never finalised formal guidelines for Dharani and statements made by then chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao have worked as modalities.

In contrast, the Congress government placed the Bhu Bharathi Bill in the public domain for 90 days before passing it as legislation, Srinivas Reddy noted. Modalities were finalised within 100 days, and the Act was formally dedicated to the people by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on April 14. He criticised BRS MLAs for attempting to obstruct the Bill in the Legislative Assembly by creating a ruckus when it was tabled. As part of the new law, special tribunals will be established across the state to help people resolve land disputes without having to approach the courts, he added.

Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy and MLAs Bheerla Illaiah, Vemula Veeresham and Kumbham Anil Kumar Reddy were also present at the event.
