Vemuri sisters, Mohit and Sharan capture doubles titles
Gunnidhi Bhima and Apurva Vemuri notched up crushing victories to win the boys and girls titles respectively at the Vasishta Open AITA Championship Series tennis tournament played at the Carnival Club in Sainikpuri, Secunderabad.
In the doubles category, the combination of Mohit Sai Charan Reddy Pasam & Sree Sharan Kanugovi in boys and Abhaya Vemuri & Apurva Vemuri in girls took home the honours.
The boys singles final was a straight sets affair. Gunnidhi outclassed Sree Sharan Kanugovi 7-5, 6-2 to seal the deal. The first set was not so easy as the players went neck and neck for most part before Gunnidhi edged past.
With a set in his bag, Gunnidhi had spring in his step and came out all guns blazing in the second. He kept Sharan on his toes, making him run about the court as he drilled winners at will to finally take it at 6-2 and wrap the match.
However, Sharan made amends by winning the doubles final alongisde Mohit as they lived up to their top billing by making short work of Aneesh Reddy Kancharla and Rohan Pagadala 6-7, 6-2 (10-7).
Having lost the first set, Sharan and Mohit upped the ante in the second to take it 6-2 and level the match scores. Then, in the super tie-breaker, they played calculatively to win the crucial points on way to winning it 10-7.
The Vemuris — Abhaya and Apurva — were top seeds in the girls doubles and played true to their position to beat Sai Dhiti Ernampati and G. Shivaani in straight sets in the final.
Abhaya and Apurva took the first set at 6-3 and wrapped the second too with an identical score to emerge champions.
It was a double title for Apurva, who won the girls singles as well, with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Saumya Ronde.
Earlier, in the the boys singles semifinals, Sharan came back from a set down to get the better of Tarun Korwar 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 while Gunnidhi sailed past Aarya Jadhav 6-3, 6-3.
The girls singles semifinals were one-sided affairs. Saumya Ronde toppled top seeded Abhaya Vemuri 6-4, 6-2 while Apurva Vemuri nailed Nirali Bahadur Pandaniya 6-3, 6-1.
In the boys singles quarterfinals, Sharan comfortably walked past Venkat Rishi Batlanki as the scoreline read 6-2, 6-2. It was like a cake walk for Sharan as he could pick points without putting in much effort.
In girls singles quarterfinals, Abhaya Vemuri emerged a 6-2, 6-1 victor over Srivally Medishetty. Srivally found it tough to keep up to her opponent who was technically better on the court.
Buoyed with the easy first set victory, Abhaya gradually piled pressure on her rival as she picked points consistently to take the match.
