Promise Fulfilled: Shafali Verma Shines Bright at Asian Games 2026

Shafali's aggressive batting not only powered India into the final but also fulfilled a long-awaited promise

In Japan on Sunday, Shafali Verma lit up the Asian Games semi-final against Bangladesh with an unbeaten 100 off just 49 balls, a knock studded with nine towering sixes and three fours. Her aggressive batting not only powered India into the final but also fulfilled a long-awaited promise.
Father’s Blessings and Promise
Speaking exclusively, her father Sanjeev Verma attributed the milestone to divine grace: “It is indeed Goddess Mata Rani’s blessing. She was eluded for her first hundred in T20I since her debut in 2019. We all are very happy with her performance today. I spoke to her yesterday and had reminded her of her promise which she gave before leaving for the Asian Games—that she would definitely score a hundred on this tour.”
Ganpati Devotion and Family Journey
The Verma household in Rohtak had installed a Ganpati idol during the festival. Sanjeev shared: “We everyday worshiped God and prayed for Shafali’s best performance and Team India’s Gold Medal in the Asian Games.”
Soon after her century, the family set out on a car journey to Haridwar, about 250 km away, to immerse the idol in the river. Alongside Sanjeev were Shafali’s mother Parveen Bala, her younger sister Nancy (herself a budding cricketer), and brother Sahil.
Childhood Anecdote
Playing for Sahil, Sanjeev fondly recalled Shafali’s determination when Sahil fell ill years ago: “She chopped her hair short, dressed in boys’ clothes, and took his place in an Under-12 school national championship in Panipat—where she won Player of the Series. Even when fast deliveries smashed her helmet grille, she refused to quit.”
Records and Reverence
Nicknamed “Shifu” by her teammates, Shafali has been rewriting records since her teens. At 15 years and 285 days, she became the youngest Indian to score an international half-century, breaking a 30-year-old record held by her idol Sachin Tendulkar. Her latest century is not just a personal triumph but a symbol of resilience, faith, and family devotion. For Sanjeev Verma, it is the culmination of prayers, promises, and perseverance.
