IPL 2025: Can SRH still qualify for play-offs after four losses in a row?

After opening the 2025 season in a grand manner, posting a mammoth 286-run total and containing opponents - Rajasthan Royals to 242, SRH lost the next four matches in a row.

Sunrisers Hyderabad is reeling under pressure after four successive defeats in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), threatening their play off chances.

After opening the 2025 season in a grand manner, posting a mammoth 286-run total and containing opponents - Rajasthan Royals to 242, SRH lost the next four matches in a row.
Facing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT), the Pat Cummins-led side not only faced defeat but also failed to give a tough competition.
Out of the four losses, two games were home matches, making things more concerning.
Play-off chances:
Although it's too soon in the tournament, time is running fast for the 2016 Champions to turn things around.
For any team to qualify for the play-offs they should have a minimum of 16 points (generally), translating to 8 wins.
With each side getting to play a total of 14 league games in the tournament, SRH already finished five matches to stick to the bottom of the points table with only two points. Out of the remaining nine matches, SRH has a Herculean task of winning seven of them to make it to the play-offs.
SRH problems
From being praised as the only team capable of scoring a grand total of 300 before the start of the tournament to bundling out for a mere 120 against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on a batting friendly pitch, sums up SRH's struggles with batting.
The top order, which executed their attacking plans in the first game, failed to gain momentum in the last four matches. Last season's runner-ups scored 190/9, 163, 120, 152/8 in their previous encounters with the top order not delivering up to the reputation.

Coming to their bowling, almost all bowlers in their last five matches have conceded a lot of runs. Starting with skipper Pat Cummins, who leaked a total of 60 runs against RR in the opener.

Their bowling unit, which includes the likes of India's star pacer Mohammed Shami, Cummins, Adam Zampa and Harshal Patel failed to defend a decent total of 190 runs on home soil. LSG chased down 190 runs with almost four overs to spare.

In their last outing against GT, the struggling bowling unit let the match slip away too soon, as the Shubman Gill-led side chased down the modest total of 152 in 16.4 overs.

SRH head coach also admitted the poor effort in fielding as well.

"We just haven't been near our best in any of the last four games. And I think that's all three disciplines. I think the barometer of most teams is how their fielding is going and we've been pretty poor in the field. So those will be the work-ons between now and the Punjab game," Daniel Vettori said in the post-match presentation of their clash with GT.

Going forward they have to take it easy on their ultra-aggressive approach and respect the conditions to get better results, as rightly opined by Vettori.

"I think if you look at the wins that we've had, they came with a lot of understanding of what the wicket is behaving like and adjusting our game plans accordingly," the former Black Caps player said.
