Arvind, Prakash shatter national marks
Bengaluru: Arvind Mani and Damini K. Gowda shone brightest for Karnataka even as Sajan Prakash and Shivani Kataria eclipsed national records on Day Three of the 70th Glenmark Senior National aquatic championships at Ranchi on Monday.
Arvind shattered the national mark in the 200m backstroke event in a time of 2:06.23s to rewrite Rohit Havaldar’s record of 2:06.23 set three years ago. Arvind’s state-mate N. Sri Hari took the bronze in 2:07.13 behind Madhu PS (2:07.02).
Damini bagged her second gold of the meet topping the podium in 100m butterfly in 1:04.13s with team-mate Mayuri Lingaraj making it 1-2 with a silver finish in 1:05.18s. Damini also claimed bronze in the 200m freestyle, clocking 2:09.94s.
Prakash, Shivani set national mark
Rio Olympian Prakash picked up from where he left on Sunday, adding another national mark to his name in the 100m butterfly event. Prakash stopped the clock at 54.43s to erase Veerdhawal Khade’s mark of 54.59s set last year. Prakash’s Railways’ team-mate Supriyo Mondal (55.19s) came in second with Aman Ghai (56.38s) of Punjab in third.
Shivani, also part of the 2016 Olympics, set the national mark in 200m freestyle event with a time of 2:06.97s, wiping off Richa Mishra’s five-year-old record of 2:07.29s.
Meanwhile, Gujarat set a new national mark in the 4x50m mixed relay with a time of 1:53.42s, rewriting Maharashtra’s previous record of 1:54.13s.
Railways continue to lead the medal tally with nine gold, four silver and two bronze. Maharashtra are second with four gold, seven silver and three bronze ahead of Gujarat with four gold and one bronze.
Karnataka are fourth with three gold, seven silver and nine bronze.
