Olympic medal winner Manuel Fredericks yet to get promised land

In 2014, State allotted him a plot under the zero-landless scheme and '20 lakh for construction.

KANNUR: Kannur Municipal Corporation is yet to find alternate land for the state’s lone Olympic medal winner Manuel Fredericks after making it clear that he cannot build a house on the three cents the government allotted at Payyambalam citing master plan. Though the mayor at the recently held council meeting promised to provide its land or the revenue department’s, the district collector received no intimation so far.

The corporation is also keeping quiet about repaying the money he spent on the compound wall using the Suresh Babu Lifetime Achievement award money he received last year. In 2014, the government allotted him the plot under the zero-landless scheme and Rs 20 lakh for construction. He received the money last month, but the civic body denied permission saying it was earmarked only for the park purpose.

“We will find another land for the Olympian, but I cannot assure a period for the identification of land,” said mayor E.P Latha. The septuagenarian is presently living in Bangalore in a rented house with family coaching school kids. The matter is now before sports minister E.P. Jayarajan.
