Asiad gold medallist Vinesh Phogat rubbishes alleged Neeraj Chopra love affair report

A national newspaper published a story that read there was something brewing between Phogat and Neeraj Chopra.

Mumbai: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has hit back at a newspaper report speaking about her alleged affair with javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. Phogat on Monday scripted history by becoming the only Indian women wrestler to win the gold at Asian Games after finishing first in the 50kg freestyle category.

Soon after securing gold, a national newspaper published a story that said there was something brewing between Phogat and Neeraj Chopra. The report published showed a picture of Neeraj coming to watch Phogat’s final match and hinted that the duo may be getting closer.

But Vinesh soon rubbished the report saying it was just a sign of encouragement by the Indian flag bearer and she was disappointed that it was portrayed in the wrong way.

“Really sad to see that a simple gesture of being present when one athlete is chasing glory for #India is painted in the wrong light Myself and @Neeraj_chopra1 and every other Indian athlete will support each other to ALWAYS make proud, nothing more! Thank you,” she wrote on Twitter.

India’s flag bearer Neeraj also had something to say regarding the report. He wrote that he was present to cheer for a fellow athlete and that it was in the right spirit.
