Chennai at the ready for JPL

Jallikattu Peravai and Chennai Jallikattu Amaipu have put together a league in January for the popular sport.

After almost a year when the Chennai Marina beach was flooded with people protesting for the right to play jallikattu, the traditional sport is coming to Chennai itself. Majorly held in Madurai and its surroundings, this harvest festival game, has a huge support from the youngsters across the state. For the first time ever, jallikattu will be held at the ECR!

Organised by Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Peravai and Chennai Jallikattu Amaipu, jallikattu will be played ahead of Pongal in an Indian Premiere League-styled event! The logo for the same was unveiled recently and around 500 bulls from 17 districts across the state and several hundred bull-tamers will be taking part in the event, which is scheduled to be held on January 7 in an open ground near the Madras Crocodile Bank on East Coast Road.

The bulls will be divided into five groups and there will be five rounds in the competition. There are lucrative prizes for the final winners.

The organisers also assured proper availability of medical facilities for the bulls and the contestants at the venue, besides making provisions for adequate rest for the cattle after they are brought from Madurai, Salem and other parts of the state. “It is an effort to enthrall our Chennaites who have not watched this valorous sport of Tamils so far, although many youngsters sat in the pro jallikattu protest in Marina last year,” they revealed.
