Netherlands joined Belgium, Australia and England in the semifinals.
Bhubaneswar: India’s dreams of winning the Hockey World Cup for the first time in 43 years ended after a 2-1 loss to Netherlands in the quarterfinal encounter here on Thursday.
With this result, India’s winless jinx against the Dutch in the World Cup continued as the Men in Orange joined Belgium, Australia and England in the semifinals.
Hosts’ Akashdeep Singh opened the scoring in the 12th minute only for the Dutch to equalise just before the end of first quarter in the form of Thierry Brinkmann.
India’s hopes were given a blow when Mink van der Weerden scored the eventual winner in the 50th minute through a penalty corner.
