Wrestler Sushil Kumar is still in Rio Olympics contention

Doubts were raised over Sushil's chances for Rio Olympics with Wrestling Federation of India omitting his name from list of probables.

New Delhi: Sushil Kumar or Narsingh Yadav? Confusion over India’s representation in the 74kg category at the Rio Olympic Games continued, with the Wrestling Federation of India on Thursday saying that they had not yet “taken a decision on the same”.

Doubts were raised over Sushil’s chances for the Rio Olympics with the Wrestling Federation of India omitting his name from the list of probables sent to the Indian Olympic Association for accreditations on Wednesday.

The federation, however, on the day denied sending a list to the IOA adding that it has been a regular practice for the United World Wrestling to send names of all those who have secured berths in their respective weight categories at various qualifying tournaments to the IOA.

“This list of probables is not sent by WFI but by the United World Wrestling. After all the trials are over, the world body compiles names of all those wrestlers who have secured Olympic berths for their country in various divisions at different qualifying tournaments and send it to their respective Olympic Federations,” WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said.

The WFI insisted that Sushil was still in contention for Rio. “The WFI president will decide whether and when to hold the trials. So the question on whether Sushil is not going does not arise,” said Tomar.
