New route may help break records
Bengaluru: For first time since the inception of the TCS World 10K Run, close to 23,700 runners are set to take the streets of Bengaluru and records might tumble on Race Day as the promoters unveiled the new route map here on Wednesday.
With the Metro train functioning, the promoters heaved a sigh of relief to provide runners smooth stretch on MG Road and Kamaraj Road. “The quality is better than last few years due to construction is finished but still there are degradable spots and we’re having an eye on it,” said Hugh Jones, the race director.
Having been part of the 10K run since the first edition, a confident Jones also added that international athletes could set a new course record this Sunday as the routes are little simpler, with lesser turns and more variations in terms of the terrain. “Chances of a new course record are higher now. The final Cubbon Park stretch is the fastest one since it’s just a downward descent. Runners will definitely benefit. This is a perfect route for those aiming a course record,” he added.
Commemorating Fortis Hospital’s 25th anniversary, more than 22,000 runners have been given CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training. “For this run, we have trained around 250 athletes and volunteers who will be present at various points on the course,” said Dr. Vivek Jawali, the Medical Director of the race. “More than 170 medical personnel are 50 mobile doctors along with 250 people from our hospitals who are running the race as well,” added Jawali.
To keep all runners hydrated during the race, there are eight water stations along the route, from where around 75,000 litres of water will be distributed, all managed by various runner groups from the city - a first for the World 10K.
