Rio 2016: Bombayla Devi, Deepika Kumari crash out

Devi lost 26-28, 26-23, 27-28, 23-25 to Mexico's Alejandra Valencia.

Rio de Janeiro: India’s dismal show continued in Rio Olympics on Thursday with archers Bombayla Devi and Deepika Kumari crashing out in pre-quarters.

Devi lost 26-28, 26-23, 27-28, 23-25 to Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia.

Ace archer Kumari suffered a heavy defeat to Chinese Taipei archer Tan Ya-Ting. She was thrashed 28-27, 29-26, 30-27 which brought an end to her Rio sojourn.

Even in London Olympics (2012), Kumari had bowed out in the first round.

As of now, Atanu Das seems to be India’s only hope who will take stage on Friday.

Das moved to the third round of men’s individual archery after getting the better of Cuba’s Adrian Andres Puentes Perez 6-4. He won the first two sets 28-26 and 29-26 easily.

For gold, India will now heavily depend on shuttlers Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. Doubles duo Ashwini Ponnappa-Jwala Gutta lost their Group A opener 15-21, 10-21 to Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi.
