Say yes to biking

Several Hyderabadis are celebrating Global Bike to Work Day by cycling to their workplace.

To be fit and healthy, one needs to be physically active. Riding a bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Global Bike to Work Day is being celebrated on May 11, and several people from the city are riding to their workplace. “I’m cycling to work. Health is the most important thing to me,” says 36-year-old CEO of Digital Marketing School, C.T. Shankar.

“I have been biking for many years now and I think it’s not only healthy for us, but also for the environment. One can help reduce carbon emission by using cycling regularly to work,” adds Shankar. 47-year-old Sridhar Chakravarthi feels that riding to work is the most time-efficient way to combine regular exercise with everyday routine. “For people who work in odd shifts or do not have a fixed time of work, taking time out for gym becomes difficult. While cycling every day to work, not only am I exercising, but as I am on the move, I don’t have to take extra time out to go to a particular place to exercise,” says Sridhar, and adds, “I used to stay far from my workplace and rode almost 38 km each day. Riding regularly builds up your stamina, so the distance between one’s workplace and home shouldn’t be a cause of concern to anyone.”However, riding to work may not be possible for everyone.

“It’s not necessary that you ride only to your workplace. But surely one can use bicycles for short distances. Many people take their cars out even when they go grocery shopping or to run daily errands. They can opt for cycles instead,” says Shankar.“Biking also saves your money, as you don’t pay for petrol, maintenance or insurance,” adds Satish Chandra Annamaneni, Specialist at Verizon.
