Kozhikode honours woman cyclist

Mayor Thottathil Raveendran handed over a cheque for Rs 2.5 lakh to her at the Council Hall in the presence of councillors.

KOZHIKODE: It been over a year and a half since the state government assured providing jobs for the medal winners of the National Games hosted by Kerala in January 2015 but Anjitha Subalithan T.P, one of the youngest medal winners with a gold and a bronze in cycling in her kitty, is still waiting for the promised job. The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation, however, somewhat made up for it by presenting a cash prize to Anjitha to purchase a cycle for her future races.

Mayor Thottathil Raveendran handed over a cheque for Rs 2.5 lakh to her at the Council Hall in the presence of councillors. Anjitha, who hails from Puthiyangadi, started cycling when she was in the eighth standard after switching from handball, her first love, on the advice of her cousin who was working in the Sports Council Hostel. “From 2007, I began participating in many national meets and won prizes,” she said.

“In 2011, I got a chance to participate in the Junior Commonwealth Games hosted by the Isle of Man. However, due to technical issues related to the visa, I could not travel to the event.” In 2015, Anjitha participated in her first ever National Games, hosted by Kerala and won a gold medal in 3km individual pursuit and also a bronze in 72 Km road mass start events. Anjitha is planning to buy a cycle for the road event with the money given by the corporation.
