Birendra Lakra marries Jharkhand girl
Jharsuguda: Odisha’s star hockey player and national hockey team’s talented defender Birendra Lakra on Monday tied the nuptial knot here with 26-year-old Rashmita Kerketta of Jharkhand. Bengaluru-based Rashmita has completed her studies at the Institute of Company Secretary and is currently working with Infosys. The marriage ceremony was held at the Arnold Church here.
Rajya Sabha member and former captain of national hockey team Dilip Tirkey and other hockey players were present. The Olympian hockey player from Odisha's Sundargarh district had got engaged to Rashmita on January 5 last year. In October 30, Lakra — who, after former India captain Dilip Tirkey, is known as one of the best defenders in the world — had won the hearts of millions for his honesty and sportsman spirit.
On the very day, India was playing the hotly contested Asian Champions Trophy final against archrivals Pakistan. India won the close contest 3-2 but not before experiencing a few anxious moments, as Pakistan searched for an equaliser to keep their fight alive. In the final quarter of the match, Lakra was hit on his leg as Pakistan made a late surge towards the Indian goal and immediately, their players appealed for a penalty corner.
The on-field referee was not confident about the Pakistani players’ claim and consequently they had to make use of their final referral. Seeing what was happening, Lakra approached the referee and told him what transpired, requesting him to not use Pakistan's referral. It was a big gamble then. A surprised referee had to then halt the review process and award Pakistan the penalty corner. Each Pakistani player was seen patting the Indian fullback on his back, praising him for his honesty.
The Pakistani players immediately assembled for the penalty corner but made a hash of it as India went on to win their second title. Pakistan coach KM Junaid hugged Lakra for his act, expressing his gratitude for the act.
