Vijayawada: The week-long national ranking table tennis tournament began at Dandlamudi Rajagoipala Rao Municipal Corporation Stadium (DRRMC) indoor stadium here on Thursday in which Central MLA Bonda Uma Maheswara Rao, municipal commissioner J. Nivas, SAAP managing director N. Bangara Raju and several others took part.
Speaking at the inaugural function, MLA Bonda Uma Maheswara Rao said several modern sports facilities were being planned in Amaravati under the supervision of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu.
He said the government has introduced a new sports policy aimed at comprehensive development of sports and appreciated the management of 11 Sports for sponsoring the national event at Vijayawada.
SAAP MD Bangara Raju said the state needs eminent TT coaches and sought involvement of 11Sports in shaping senior table tennis players of Andhra Pradesh into efficient coaches.
“Quality players will emerge only through quality coaches,” he said. “Vijayawada is famous for producing champions in three sports – chess, badminton and TT.”
