Farmer\'s son eyes chess World Cup glory

The battle of wits will feature 206 contestants from across the globe

Warangal: Nine-year-old Meesala Vamshi from the remote Gouraram village in Bayyaram mandal will be competing in the Under-10 Chess World Cup that starts on Sunday. He is the only player from Telangana state from among the 15 who will represent India.

The battle of wits will feature 206 contestants from across the globe. To be held virtually, the prestigious event is being hosted in Sochi from August 1 to 5.

Coach Gopi Krishan said, "Vamshi currently has an Elo rating of 1241 points. He has to compete in two league rounds first. He has been working hard. We are positive of a good performance from him."
Collector Abhilasha Abhinav had directed the district administration to provide Vamshi with all facilities required to hone his skills. Former collector V.P. Gautham has also extended support to the youngster.
Social welfare regional coordinator Rajyalakshmi is overseeing the facilities, which include a separate room equipped with CCTV, electricity, internet, a laptop and other amenities that have been made available by the local social welfare school.

"Coming from a poor background and knocking on the doors of the mind game’s premier international event stand testimony to Vamshi’s grit and perseverance," Abhilasha said.
