Handshake That Won Hearts : Dhoni's Subtle Gestures Speak Louder Than Words

Dhoni's career is dotted with instances where he upheld the spirit of the game with grace and humility.

On Wednesday, in the bustling stadium of Kolkata, where the echoes of the match still lingered in the air, MS Dhoni did something that reminded the world why he is revered beyond his cricketing prowess. As the customary post-match handshake ceremony unfolded, Dhoni initially missed greeting KKR’s reserve player, Chetan Sakariya. But true to his nature, he turned back, sought him out, and shook his hand—an act that spoke volumes about his attention to detail and respect for every player, regardless of their role in the game.

For Sakariya, this was more than just a handshake. It was a moment of recognition from a legend, a silent nod to their past encounter when he had dismissed Dhoni. His uncle, Kalubha Jambucha, reflected on the gesture, saying, "Dhoni is a true sportsman. He remembers every minute detail. Once Chetan took Dhoni's huge wicket, and perhaps that may be the reason he went back to him and shook hands and petted him at the back".
But this wasn’t the first time Dhoni had displayed such sportsmanship. His career is dotted with instances where he upheld the spirit of the game with grace and humility.
Dhoni’s Moments of True Sportsmanship
1. Calling Back Ian Bell – In a 2011 Test match against England, Ian Bell was controversially run out just before tea. While technically out, Dhoni withdrew the appeal, allowing Bell to continue his innings, earning a standing ovation from the crowd
2. Offering Captaincy to Sourav Ganguly – In Ganguly’s farewell Test in 2008, Dhoni handed over the captaincy to him for the final moments, a gesture of deep respect for the man who had shaped Indian cricket
3.Overruling a Wide Call in IPL – In a crunch IPL match against SRH, Dhoni edged a ball that was signaled wide. Instead of taking the advantage, he pointed to his bat, ensuring fairness in the game
4. Letting Kohli Finish the Match – In the ICC World T20 2014 semi-final, Dhoni had the chance to hit the winning runs but deliberately nudged the ball to allow Virat Kohli, who was in sublime form, to finish the game.
These moments define Dhoni—not just as a cricketer but as a true gentleman of the sport. His ability to balance fierce competitiveness with unwavering integrity is what makes him a legend, not just in statistics but in spirit.
