Good Times Will Come Again: Maguire

The Manchester United and England centre-back also rued the loss in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur that deprived his team a place in the next year’s Champions League.

Mumbai: Manchester United might be going through one of the darkest phases in its history, but its senior player Harry Maguire is optimistic about the team's fortune in the future. “New season will be a fresh start and I am sure good times will come again,” said the seasoned defender on Thursday.

“Obviously, the (just concluded) season has been disappointing and we are not happy with how it has gone. Being a Manchester United team, we want to be a lot higher in the Premier League and we want to perform better. It’s really important that we improve a lot,” said Maguire.

The Manchester United and England centre-back also rued the loss in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur that deprived his team a place in the next year’s Champions League.

“We reached the Europa League final and the result could have been different. We are disappointed to lose that game,” said Maguire.

United endured its worst ever season after finishing 15th in the Premier League, its lowest ranking in the competition, just four days after a loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. It meant that its season ended without a trophy and it is just the second time in 35 years they have missed out on European competition.

Maguire, along with his teammates Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot were in Mumbai to launch Apollo Tyre’s ‘United We Play 2025,’ the fifth season of its flagship grassroots football initiative. The pan-India initiative is being organised to support young footballers in India by giving them a platform to showcase their skills with the objective of motivating aspiring footballers to continue playing, by engaging with them and introducing them to global training methods.

Dalot backed Maguire by saying United could perform better next season under manager Ruben Amorim. “From the start, Amorim made sure that everybody, especially players, understands that he has his own style of playing football and he won’t change it for anything. Lot of changes are happening under Amorim and we are happy to be part of this journey. We now have a chance to change things and put the club back where it belongs. Hopefully we can do a lot better next season,” said the Portuguese defender.
