Sunil Chhetri gets called 4th highest run scorer' by Keshav Bansal
Mumbai: Sunil Chhetri has truly become a legendary figure in international football. The Indian football team captain has become the fourth highest active goal scorer in international football, netting 54 goals from 94 appearances.
Chhetri falls behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (73 goals from 139 appearances), Lionel Messi (58 goals from 118 appearances and America’s Clint Dempsey (56 goals in 134 matches).
The 33-year-old is in fact, one goal ahead of fifth placed England star Wayne Rooney on this list.
Keshav Bansal, who owns Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Lions, put a completely different spin to this.
Looking to praise Chhetri on his achievement, Bansal goofed up. Instead of mentioning Chhetri as the fourth highest goalscorer, Bansal named him “4th in the world for scoring the highest runs”.
Chhetri has been instrumental in turning the fortunes of the Indian football team around, as the Blue Tigers rose from the obscurity of the lowly 170s to being ranked 100th in the FIFA rankings.
India’s good form saw them go on an eight-match winnings spree, defeating the likes of Laos, Bhutan, Puerto Rico, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Kyrgyzstan. Their victories against Myanmar and Kyrgyzstan have also helped them climb to the top of Group A of the third stage of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.
