FIFA World Cup 2018: How Argentina can beat Iceland to enter knockouts

Nizhniy Novgorod: Lionel Messi and Argentina are on the brink of being eliminated from the 2018 FIFA World Cup after losing to Croatia 3-0 on Thursday. Jorge Sampaoli side has just one point from two games and will certainly have to beat Nigeria in their final Group D outing to have any chance of avoiding elimination.

The 2014 runners-up  will now battle with surprise package Iceland who look to be in strong position to clinch the second spot second spot, with whom they played out a 1-1 draw in their opening game.

With Croatia already through to the round of 16, here are some of the possible scenarios in which La Albicelestes can still qualify for the knockout stage.

1. If Iceland beat Nigeria

Both these teams will be facing each other on Friday. Iceland already has a point after a draw against Argentina, while Nigeria is yet to win a point. If Iceland wins the match, then Argentina will have to beat Nigeria on Tuesday. On the other hand.

2. If Iceland and Nigeria draw

This scenario will certainly boost Argentina's chances of making it to the knockout stage. In case of draw, Jorge Sampaoli's side will need to beat Nigeria and hope that Iceland to not beat Croatia in their final game.

3. If Nigeria surprise Iceland

In this scenario, Argentina will need to beat Nigeria by a very good margin. Their chances of making it to the knockout stage will depend  If Iceland wins their match against Croatia, and they have a better goal difference than Iceland.
