Former footballer Syed Lateefuddin Najam no more

The namaaz-e-janaza will be offered at Masjid-e-chowk after Zohar prayers on Wednesday.

Hyderabad: Syed Lateefuddin Najam, former international footballer, passed away in his hometown of Hyderabad on Tuesday morning. He had been suffering from a kidney ailment for a year. He was 66 and left behind his son and two daughters.

The namaaz-e-janaza will be offered at Masjid-e-chowk after Zohar prayers on Wednesday.

Najam, as he was popularly referred to, played for various reputed clubs in Kolkata, Mumbai, Dhaka and Hyderabad besides representing the Indian team from 1968 to 1977. A recipient of many awards during his playing days, he was recently conferred the Shaan-e-Mohammedan by Kolkata’s Mohammedan Sporting club.

Former Indian captain Victor Amalraj paid tribute to his teammate. “He was a skilled footballer, I was fortunate to play alongside him. My condolences to the bereaved family,” he said of Najam, son of Olympian Late Noor Mohammed.
