MEG clinch Super Division title
Bengaluru: In a make or break match for two teams at opposite ends of the table, MEG & Centre came out with a smile as they defeated AGORC 3-2 to clinch the BDFA Super Division football league title on Saturday.
With the loss, AGORC was relegated to the ‘A’ Division while MEG took their third Super Division title and the second under coach SP Shaji, who came back from retirement to take over the team.
AGORC needed a win from the match to stay up but was caught out by some static defending as Asif was allowed to walk the ball into the net from a Ramu cutback in the 11th minute.
They however, drew level two minutes later as a long ball from Ravinder Singh freed Dada Nabeel behind the defence and he applied a crisp finish.
Christopher restored the Army side’s lead six minutes before the break. There were chances for both sides throughout the second half but they were often let down by poor finishing, the most glaring of which came in the 72nd minute when Pradeep Kumar blazed over when through on goal.
Vishnu then doubled MEG’s lead in the 78th minute from a rebound only for Nabeel to reduce the deficit three minutes later. MEG could have had another goal in injury time when they were given a penalty, but Christopher’s spot kick was well saved by K Naresh.
Results: Super Division: MEG & Centre 3 (Asif 11, Christopher 39, Vishnu 78) bt AGORC 2 (Nabeel 13, 81) A Division: ADE 1 (Kabilan 55) drew with Income Tax 1 (Syed Ahamed 14)
