Watch: After Virat Kohli, Bengaluru FC pledge support for women's safety

The football team, which became the first Indian side to reach AFC Cup final, unveiled a new kit to pledge safety for women in the city.

Bengaluru: Bengaluru FC have been a breath of fresh air for Indian football in their last three years of existence.

Not only have the Blues won three trophies in as many seasons – 2014 and 2016 I-League, and 2015 Federation Cup – but they have also put India on the Asian football map by becoming the first team from the country to make it to the final of the AFC Cup.

They may have lost the final of the AFC Cup, but Bengaluru FC won millions of hearts by showing their support for the women in the Karnataka capital.

On January 1, the city of Bengaluru came into disrepute, as many women reportedly got molested during the New Year’s Day celebrations. While authorities were said to have been present when the incident took place, nothing was reportedly done to stop the perpetrators.

Bengaluru FC are famous for their blue jersey, and have also been nicknamed ‘the Blues’ by their fans. However, the club surprised everyone by unveiling their new kit, which is pink instead of the usual blue.

The club unveiled their new kit in a video, where BFC and India captain Sunil Chhetri, star defender John Johnson and youngster Daniel Lalhimpuia showed their support for the women in the city.

Earlier this month, Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli also sent out an emotional message, calling Bengaluru incident “disturbing”, and batting for women’s safety in the country.
