Khalid Jamil to become East Bengal's coach
Mumbai: Khalid Jamil, who led Aizawl FC to their maiden I-League triumph, is set to become East Bengal’s coach for the next season.
Senior club official Debabrata Sarkar travelled to Mumbai with former footballer Alvito D’Cunha to hold talks with Jamil.
The Mumbai-based coach hasn’t signed a contract yet but the offer and the challenge it brings in is too enticing for the 40-year-old coach to ignore. Jamil was adjudged best I-League (206-17) coach at the Aiff awards on Thursday. “It was a pleasure to receive the award. It gives good encouragement,” he said.
“After the awards I had a detailed meeting with East Bengal representatives. I have not yet signed the papers yet but I will take a final decision on Wednesday or even Tuesday. I am waiting to hear from Aizawl’s management also. Couple of other clubs have also approached me but at the moment only East Bengal has held talks with me and I am considering it seriously,” he said.
Mumbai FC parted ways with Jamil last year after seven seasons. He then took up the reins at Aizawl and played an instrumental role in their title triumph.
