Thiruvananthapuram to host Mayor\'s Cup soccer tournament

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the tourney at a function to be held on August 25.

Thiruvananthapuram: After 25 long years, the state capital will host the Mayor's ever-rolling Gold Cup All India Football Tournament 2019.

As many as 14 teams from across the nation including Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will take part in the tournament which would be held at University Stadium from August 25 to September 4.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the tourney at a function to be held on August 25.

Ace footballer I. M. Vijayan would be the chief guest.

Bengaluru FC, Indian Navy, Chennai City FC, Dhanbad Football Academy Jharkhand, Signals Goa, Gokulam Kerala, Keralam State Eleven, SBI Kerala, Kerala Police, Titanium, KSEB, Kovalam FC, Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Eleven, AG's Kerala are the teams which would be taking part.

Mayor V. K. Prasanth, in a press conference held here on Thursday, said it would be a spectacular experience for the Trivandrumites. "Many leading teams from popular football clubs from across the nation would take part in the tournament. The last Mayor's Cup was held back in 1997, and then SBT lifted the cup by defeating Kannur Keltron," said the mayor.

"The training for our Corporation Eleven team would start on August 16. We are planning to hold rallies to parade around the trophy which is worth Rs 20 lakh. The winner would get a cash prize of Rs 50000, and the runner-up Rs 30000."
