Rooneys shocked by robbery attempt

Rooney took to social media to thank his legion of fans for showing up to support him and for raising funds for charity.

Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen have thanked fans for donating money to a children’s charity in the wake of reports their family home was almost plundered by masked robbers. The 30-year-old Manchester United midfielder took part in a testimonial match with proceeds from the game going to children’s charities.

Rooney took to social media to thank his legion of fans for showing up to support him and for raising funds for charity. “Thanks to everybody who donated last night. You’re making a real difference to a lot of children’s lives who need it,” he wrote on Twitter and Instagram. However, while Coleen and the kids (six-year-old Kai, three-year-old Klay, and Kit, six months) watched Wayne on the pitch, their £6million home near Cheshire was said to have been raided by balaclava-clad intruders.

The Sun reports the family were ‘deeply shocked’ by the intrusion — the would-be criminal tripping an alarm system and automatically summoning three patrol cars, dog handlers, and a police helicopter to the scene. It is also reported that police chased off the intruder who escaped in a getaway car — but dropped a backpack containing ‘gaffer tape and electrical ties’ as he fled.
