Lionel Messi extends stay with FC Barcelona

The Barcelona superstar has now extended his stay with the club till the summer of 2021.

Barcelona: Lionel Messi has, on Wednesday, signed a new contract with FC Barcelona, extending his stay at the club by another four years.

The Barcelona superstar has now extended his stay with the club till the summer of 2021, the club confirmed.

Messi was earlier reportedly linked with English clubs Manchester City and Manchester United among others, but has now made up his mind of staying with Barca.

Messi has been with Barcelona for more than a decade after he joined in 2004. He scored 54 goals for the club from 52 matches last season, which includes matches from La Liga, UEFA Champions League and Copa Del Rey.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has won eight La Liga, four Champions League and five Copa Del Rey titles with the Catalan club.

The Argentine, however, did not have a season to celebrate, after his team was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Juventus in the quarterfinal. This was followed by missing out on the La Liga title, after arch-rivals Real Madrid clinched the title on the final day.

The 30-year-old has also failed to win a trophy with Argentina, as his team faltered in the final of the Copa America twice to Chile, in 2015 and 2016. Also, he missed an opportunity to win a FIFA World Cup in 2014, when Argentina lost to Germany 1-0 in the final, which went onto the extra time.

Messi got married to his childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo last week.
