End of Road Near for Rohit, Virat? Here's What BCCI Top-brass Said
Rohit and Kohli have announced T20I retirement after India's victory in T20 World Cup in 2024 and quit the traditional format shockingly after the Border Gavaskar Trophy

The past few days were full of speculations and media reports which claimed that end of the road is near for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli -- two of India's modern-day greats.
Both Rohit and Virat last played a cricket match during the 2025 IPL. They have announced T20I retirement after India's victory in T20 World Cup in 2024 and quit the traditional format shockingly after the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
The speculations of their ODI retirement started much before but grew louder after the squad announcement of Asia Cup, as reports suggested that Shreyas Iyer, who was omitted from the 15-member list, would be made the new ODI captain replacing Rohit Sharma.
Moreover, the reports claimed that Rohit was asked by the BCCI to retire after the Australia series or he would be dropped, while Kohli's selection would depend on his performance.
However, putting an end to the rumors, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the reports and said "That's news to me. There have been no such discussions."
Additionally, speaking in a podcast on the sidelines of UPT20, Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice president maintained that the cricket governing body never asks its players to retire.
Responding to a question on Rohit and Kohli getting a farewell like Sachin, he said, "When did they retire? Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will both play ODIS. So, if they are playing, why are you worried about a farewell series? Yes, they have retired from two formats in phases, but they are playing in ODIs, right? No need to overthink about it."
"Our policy at BCCI is very clear. We don't tell any player to retire. A player himself makes that call. He has to decide, and we respect that. We can only decide something when it's official. Virat Kohli is extremely fit, and Rohit Sharma has been playing so well. Why are you worried about the farewell?"
