KPL: De Silva, Jacob Oram to mentor franchisees?

Fifth edition of 8-team league to begin from Sept. 16.

Bengaluru: With the fifth season of the Karnataka Premier League set to be played from September 16 to October 1, the franchisees are looking to rope former star cricketers as mentors.

During the launch of the fifth edition to be played at two venues — Mysuru and Hubballi, it is reliably learnt defending champions Bijapur Bulls are in talks to sign former Sri Lankan legend Aravinda De Silva as mentor.

According to sources, Bellary Tuskers had discussions with New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram and South African ace Lance Klusener for a similar role.

“KPL gives them the IPL experience and performing under pressure of the franchisees. What we have seen is that players have performed (well under pressure),” said Brijesh Patel, secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

“We started in 2009 and now it has grown. I’m sure this edition will be better than the fourth,” he added. Meanwhile, the eight-team T20 fiesta that has unearthed talented cricketers from various parts of the state will get under way in Mysuru at the SDNR Wadiyar ground from Sept.16-22. Following a two-day break, Hubballi’s Rajnagar Stadium will host the remaining matches from September 24 to October 1 including the semifinals and final.

Sony TV is the official broadcaster while KSCA have signed up with South African channel Supersport along with US-based Willow TV. The players’ auction will take place in Bengaluru on August 10. Each side can retain upto 4 players. The maximum strength of the squad is 18.
