His effort, along with convincing performances from Axar Patel (1-35), Hardik Pandya (1-42) and Kedar Jadhav (1-12) ensured that India restricted Sri Lanka to 217-9 from their quota of 50 overs.

Dinesh Chandimal (36) and Lahiru Thiramanne (80) top scored for the hosts, as they failed to post competitive total in spite of a 57-run partnership between the two. Akila Dananjaya (2-38) was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka.

India, on the other hand, chasing down modest target of 218, got off to the worst possible start with Shikhar Dhawan (5) departing early, clean bowled by Lasith Malinga (1-25). Captain Virat Kohli’s stay at crease was short lived as he was dismissed by Vishwa Fernando for just three runs. Rohit Sharma (124*) and KL Rahul then steadied the ship for India, before the latter threw his wicket away for 17 runs dismissed by mystery spinner Akila Dhananjaya.

Kedar Jadhav also lasted for just two deliveries as he departed for a duck, trapped leg before wicket by Dananjaya.

WICKET! What drama out there. Two reviews in the same over, and both taken correctly. Niroshan Dickwella has an lbw appeal by Jasprit Bumrah overturned, but a couple of balls later, the Indian pacer comes back with another yorker to trap the Sri Lanka opener. The umpire, unlike last time, did not give an out. However, Virat Kohli immediately signalled for a review, which showed that Dickwella was caught plumb in front of the stumps.

Pallekele: Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat in the third ODI against India here on Sunday. After surviving a scare in Pallekele, Virat Kohli-led India will aim to clinch five-match ODI series as they take on Sri Lanka.

Chamara Kapugedara, who is leading the Sri Lankan side in place of Upul Tharanga, and Virat Kohli seemed to have their respective wish granted. While Sri Lanka seemed keen to bat first, India, as Kohli said, wanted to bowl first.

India have retained their winning combination from the last two ODIs while Sri Lanka have brought in Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal in place of injured Gunathilaka and suspended Tharanga.

While the hometeam gave itself a chance to level the series in the second ODI as Akila Dananjaya ran through the Indian middle order, MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s “jailbreak” stand stopped the Lankan march.

While Sri Lanka will be without the services of Upul Tharanga as he is facing suspension following slow over-rate, India will be bolstered as Hardik Pandya is declared fit following an injury in the second ODI.

Indian skipper Kohli, who had made it clear that the team management will experiment in the ODIs, will look to continue the same policy even after a collapse. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have an uphill task to avoid a series with two games still to be played.
